NEW! Winter School on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Ethics, and Human Rights

15–19 December 2025, Hybrid format: Rome (Italy) and online
Deadline for application: 1 December 2025

Artificial intelligence is transforming our societies, creating new opportunities while raising urgent ethical and human rights concerns. From algorithmic bias and discrimination to the tension between public safety and individual freedoms, the integration of AI into fields such as criminal justice, healthcare, and labour presents profound challenges. As global efforts to regulate AI struggle to keep pace with innovation, there is a growing need for knowledge, ethical reflection, and accountability to ensure that AI development remains human-centric and rights-respecting.

In response, and following the success of its inaugural edition, UNICRI and LUMSA Human Academy are pleased to announce the second edition of the Winter School on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Ethics and Human Rights, taking place from 15 to 19 December 2025 in hybrid format: in person in Rome and online.

About the Course

The Winter School offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary exploration of the scientific, legal, and ethical dimensions of AI and its impact on human rights. Through a dynamic learning environment (featuring lectures, case studies, debates, and expert insights), participants will examine:

  • Key ethical principles guiding AI development and deployment

  • Risks such as algorithmic bias, discrimination, and inequality

  • The application of international human rights law to AI systems

  • AI in sectors such as healthcare, labour, and criminal justice

  • Neurotechnologies and their convergence with AI

  • Recent regulatory developments, including the 2024 EU AI Act

The course also introduces participants to the activities of the UNICRI Centre for AI and Robotics, which has promoted a human rights-based approach to AI since 2016, and to LUMSA’s Center for Bioethics and Digital Transition, a hub for interdisciplinary research on AI ethics.

Designed for students, researchers, professionals, UN personnel, and anyone interested in the intersection of AI, ethics, and human rights, the Winter School provides the tools to critically assess the role of AI in shaping our future societies.

Whether attending in person or online, participants will engage with internationally recognised experts and a global cohort of peers, fostering intercultural dialogue and building lasting professional connections.
