UNICRI has released its new report entitled Strategies and Partnerships for the Women, Peace, Security Agenda between Mauritania and Italy, a strategic document that explores possible synergies between the two countries in the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda. Prepared with the support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, this report offers an in-depth analysis of the institutional landscape in Mauritania, mapping the main actors – governmental, civil society, and international – involved in peace, security, and gender equality efforts.

The report identifies concrete entry points for enhanced cooperation with Italy, based on consultations with local and regional partners. These exchanges provided valuable insights into ongoing initiatives, challenges, and opportunities for strengthening the implementation of the WPS Agenda.

In addition, the findings incorporate the outcomes of an event UNICRI organized in May 2025 in Rome, which brought together representatives of the Mauritanian and Italian governments. The event confirmed both countries’ commitment to deepening their collaboration on these crucial issues and enabled the consolidation of shared priorities to advance the WPS Agenda through an inclusive, gender-sensitive, and context-specific approach.

By intersecting the dimensions of gender, youth, migration, and conflict prevention, the report offers a strategic roadmap to strengthen the resilience of Mauritanian society, while also highlighting the importance of coordinated and locally based responses, emphasising the leading role of women and youth in peace processes.

The document also provides concrete recommendations to strengthen bilateral cooperation. It highlights existing initiatives, while proposing new avenues of work, including:

  • systematic integration of a gender perspective into security, development and prevention of violent extremism policies;

  • reinforcement of partnerships with national actors and civil society;

  • promotion of women's role in mediation and governance;

  • improved access to education, justice and socio-economic opportunities; and

  • closer linkages between migration and peace and security issues.

Through this publication, UNICRI reaffirms its commitment to promoting sustainable, inclusive solutions based on strong partnerships. The report serves as a practical resource for peace actors, policymakers, and international partners working towards a concrete and coherent implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda in Mauritania.
