Winter School on Environmental Crimes
NEW! Winter School on Environmental Crimes

17–21 November 2025, Online
Deadline for application: 2 November 2025

Environmental crimes are among the fastest-growing and most profitable forms of transnational crime, often linked to organised criminal networks and significant threats to human health, ecosystems, and global security. As environmental degradation accelerates, the international community has recognised the urgent need to strengthen justice systems and international cooperation to prevent and combat these crimes. In line with global strategies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, addressing environmental crimes is essential for fostering sustainable, safe, and inclusive societies.

Against this backdrop, the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and the Italian Society for International Organization (SIOI) are pleased to announce the ninth edition of the Winter School on Environmental Crimes, which will be held online from 17 to 21 November 2025.

About the Course

The Winter School offers participants a solid foundation in understanding environmental crimes and how law enforcement and judicial systems are responding to these complex challenges. It aims to promote justice and advance environmental protection by raising awareness of the risks, dynamics, and responses related to eco-crimes.

Participants will explore a wide range of topics through a multidisciplinary and practice-oriented approach, including:

  • International legal frameworks to prevent crimes against the environment

  • Environmental crimes and terrorism

  • Illegal mining and environmental degradation

  • Organised crime and waste trafficking

  • Wildlife crime and its links to broader criminal activity

  • Environmental conflicts and access to justice

  • Individual, corporate and State responsibility

The programme combines live webinars, interactive discussions, dynamic case studies, individual readings, and practical exercises. The faculty includes experts from the United Nations system, international legal and human rights bodies, academia, and civil society.

Through a dedicated online platform, participants will engage with peers and professionals from around the globe, fostering intercultural dialogue and developing lasting professional connections.
