On 25-29 September the Train-the-Trainers (TTT) course on countering trafficking of radiological and nuclear (RN) materials was held at the Customs Training Center of Moldova.
Eight participants from Customs Service, Security and Intelligence Service, and Stefan cel Mare Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Moldova underwent a 5-day training, acquiring essential knowledge on intelligence operations to intercept RN trafficking attempts as well as training methodology.
The training initiative was organized within the framework of Phase II of the CONTACT – Black Sea project, which aims to collaborate with national training institutions to integrate training on countering radiological and nuclear trafficking into their systems.
Throughout the project’s implementation, instructors from Moldovan security and law enforcement agencies will participate in a series of TTT sessions focusing on delivering counter RN trafficking training programmes within their respective agencies.
In the coming months UNICRI will support instructors and Moldovan training institutions to incorporate the CONTACT training curriculum into their programmes and facilitate the organization of the first training courses.
Background information
On the 1st of June 2020, UNICRI officially launched the project “CONTACT - Black Sea: Enhancing capacities to prevent the trafficking of radiological and nuclear material in the Black Sea region”. The project aims to enhance the capacities of security and law enforcement officials in Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine to prevent and counter trafficking of radiological and nuclear material and foster regional cooperation and exchange of information on RN trafficking-related incidents. The project is implemented by UNICRI and is jointly funded by the United Kingdom Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (UK DESNZ); the Norwegian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (DSA); and the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA).
