Innovative ideas to address the misuse of blockchain knowledge and technologies
Advances in blockchain are spurring a revolution in the delivery of a wide range of trust-based services, with applications ranging from financial markets, supply chains, consumer and business-to-business services, and publicly-held registers. With this capacity, however, there equally exist new possibilities for deliberate misuse, as blockchain knowledge and technologies become increasingly accessible to organized criminal groups and terrorist networks.
Artificial intelligence and blockchain technologies are two of the most promising, complex, and fast advancing current technological developments. ‘Artificial intelligence’ refers to computer systems that exhibit abilities to perform problem-solving, predictive analysis, and other cognitive tasks. In recent years, advanced machine-learning algorithms able to learn on their own on the basis of large data sets have raised legitimate concerns but also brought about novel opportunities to enhance decision-making processes, to inform policy choices, and to advance common goals.
On Monday 29 January, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, UNICRI convened a restricted group of global experts from international organizations, the private sector and civil society organizations to discuss and validate possible applications and risk scenarios related to Blockchain technology.
