The Director of UNICRI, Bettina Tucci Bartsiotas, and the Head of the UNICRI Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Irakli Beridze, addressed the issue of the exploitation of children online during the Bracket Foundation Panel hosted by the Interfaith Alliance for Safer Communities at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The Panel on how Artificial Intelligence can combat the online sexual abuse of children, examined the scale of the problem and the steps that are needed to prevent and stop these crimes from being committed.
The 2nd edition of the Hackathon for Peace, Justice and Security will take place in The Hague, The Netherlands from 14-16 June. Organized by the Municipality of The Hague, participants are invited to use their skills in artificial intelligence to hack for peace, justice and security by solving real world problems. UNICRI, through its Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, has joined this initiative, becoming a challenge owner alongside Translators Without Borders and the National Rapporteur for Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation of Children.
An effective strategy to mitigate CBRN risks of criminal, accidental or natural origin requires a very high level of co-operation and co-ordination both between different national agencies as well as among Countries and International and Regional Organizations. Lack of harmonization of national preparedness and fragmentation of responsibilities within the regional or international network can reduce effectiveness of prevention strategies and cause delay in response during crisis situation.
Cross-border capital movements that serve to conceal illegal activities or evade taxation have been recently placed at the centre of the international agenda. Trade misinvoicing, profit shifting by multinational corporations, and offshore bank deposits to conceal the proceeds of crime or simply to avoid taxes, all deprive national treasuries of much needed resources. Resources which could otherwise be invested in development. Vulnerable populations in developing countries are the most affected by the harmful consequences of illicit financial flows.
