At the request of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) conducted a one-day, in-person training in Bern, Switzerland, on the 9th of May 2025. The session aimed to strengthen national capacities to counter disinformation related to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) risks.
On 12 June 2025, UNICRI, together with the Permanent Missions of Germany and Mauritania, convened an expert discussion at the German House in New York on the increasingly interconnected risks of climate change and violent extremism. The discussion was part of the ongoing “Climate Talks” series, organised by German Mission.
The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) during its 2025 Management Segment, adopted resolution E/2025/L.7, under agenda item 21 on United Nations Research and Training Institutes.
The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), in collaboration with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Executive Office for Control and Non-Proliferation (EOCN) and the United States Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), successfully concluded a two-day workshop titled “CBRN Proliferation Finance: The Emirati Perspective” on 27–28 May 2025 in Dubai.
The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and the Department of Public Security of the Italian Ministry of the Interior signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to reinforce and expand their collaboration in preventing and countering complex criminal phenomena.
As threats involving chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) materials grow more complex, Ukraine is strengthening its preparedness through hands-on legal training. Central to this effort is a Mock Trial exercise, a practical component of the European Union (EU) Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Centres of Excellence (CoE) Initiative, aimed at improving the country’s capacity to investigate, prosecute, and adjudicate crimes involving CBRN elements.
The Toolkit for Responsible AI Innovation in Law Enforcement (AI Toolkit) is a set of resources tailor-made to support law enforcement agencies to navigate the complex task of institutionalizing responsible AI and integrating AI systems into their work. It is intended to support agencies to both leverage the opportunities and tackle the challenges that AI presents.
The resources contained in the AI Toolkit can aid law enforcement in their enhancing their understanding, developing, procuring, and using of AI systems in a way that is aligned with human rights law, ethics and policing principles. In addition to providing a theoretical foundation, it also contains practical tools to support law enforcement agencies to put the theory into practice at each stage of their AI innovation journey.
Although intended for use by the law enforcement community, the AI Toolkit is also relevant and accessible to a diverse range of stakeholders, including industry, academia, civil society, and the general public.
The AI Toolkit was developed by the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics at UNICRI and the INTERPOL Innovation Centre, with the financial support of the European Union.

A COLLABORATIVE AND CONSULTATIVE EFFORT
The development of the AI Toolkit was enriched through continuous collaboration with a multidisciplinary Core Group of Experts, established in November 2020, who met regularly to discuss and provide feedback on the key aspects or issues pertaining to the contents of the AI Toolkit. The process also benefited largely from comprehensive consultations with stakeholders from law enforcement, industry, academia, judiciary and prosecutors, and human rights experts and the general public.
NEXT STEPS
With the launch of the AI Toolkit, INTERPOL and UNICRI move into the next phase of their work to advance responsible AI innovation in law enforcement. This will include, a web-based interactive version of the AI Toolkit, training to agencies on responsible AI innovation, mentoring senior executives in law enforcement agencies, and expanding the understanding of the constraints and factors behind public perceptions of law enforcement use of AI.
